Microsoft Surface Tablet

Ever since Microsoft announced that it will be releasing a new version of its Surface tablet, the Windows RT Surface tablet, talks about how much it will priced have been floating around. A Swedish site allegedly reported that the price will be over $1000, which was actually anything but true.

Now, Engadget received an anonymous tip that Microsoft will offer the Windows RT Surface at a suggested retail price of $199. People can’t help but think whether this is Microsoft’s strategy to clash head on with Google’s Nexus 7 and Amazon’s Kindle Fire.

At the time that it was first announced, Windows RT Surface tablet was rumored to cost in the same price range as other ARM-based tablets, which puts it between $399 and $599. Then, Google released its Nexus 7 tablet at $199, and with the unconfirmed reports of a $199 Windows RT Surface tablet, is Microsoft really aiming for this level?

Despite all these, it still seems unlikely that Microsoft will offer the Surface RT for this price. If it is true that it is planning to compete with Google’s Nexus 7, an extreme rift is likely to happen between Microsoft and its hardware partners. Besides, the tip remains anonymous, and one can’t just rely on that for truth. It seems we need to just wait for Microsoft’s confirmation regarding this matter.
