Microsoft Surface RT Tablet

In a release by IHS iSuppli to CNET, Microsoft Surface RT Tablet is expected to record sales of about a million units in the 4th quarter. To be precise it is 1.3 million units as per Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at IHS iSuppli. Since the Surface RT went on sale on October 26th, the effective time frame in which it is expected to reach the magic 1 million mark is less than one quarter.

Comparatively the Google Nexus 7 which went into sales last June started off with sales figures of only 500,000 units a month. It is currently selling at 1 million units a month. When we compare pricing, the Google Nexus 7 retails at $199 while the Surface RT sales at $499. To stretch the comparison a bit more, iPad sold 14 million units in the third quarter.

Not all industry sources however seems to veto that statement. For example Boston-based brokerage firm, Detwiler Fenton mentioned that the Microsoft Surface RT is likely to sale a lot less than the 1 million units. The initial supplies of the Surface RT tablets in Asia were very aggressive but those numbers were not substantiated. A recent independent survey reported that the numbers were higher than what iSuppli is reporting.

The Surface RT, to be fair, has a very limited sales channel something that can be a problem for the company’s sales figures. Currently the tablet is available only through the 31 Microsoft stores, 34 smaller holiday specialty stores and the Microsoft online stores in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the UK and the US. Additionally no official comments about the Surface RT’s sale figures could be obtained.
