Surface Tablet Apps

According to a post on the Lync Team Blog, dated September 20, a new Lync application will be available at the end of October. The App will be sold through the Windows Store and is said to be designed specifically for the Windows 8 operating system, Microsoft Surface tablet and Windows RT. Microsoft has added various new features to Lync, its unified-communications server and clients. Lync supplies enterprise solutions in the form of VOIP, conference calling and instant messaging to its desktop clients. The new server and Lync application will now provide an assortment of smartphone platforms and a browser-based Lync web app in addition to the desktop client. The release is set to overlap with the release of the Windows 8 Tablet on October 26, 2012.

Although the new application “is Lync re-imagined for the new Windows Experience,” the blog stated, “The new Lync App … will be compatible with both Lync Server 2010 and Lync Server 2013.” Lync 2013 will also include Skype Federation along with its call anyone on Skype and instant message services. In distinguishing between the two services, Microsoft officials have stressed the added layer of security — relating Lync with inside the firewall unified-communications solutions and Skype as outside the firewall.

Of course, the release of Lync does not mean all the Office 2013 products will be available with the release of the Microsoft tablet PC in October and Microsoft officials continue to be tight lipped as to when that date would be. However, they did say the final version of Office 2013 Home & Student edition would be available in early November for the Windows RT.
