Surface Tablet Warranty

Following its release into the market, the support policy for the Microsoft Surface tablet was initially unclear. However, a recent statement by the software giant revealed the life cycle support for its Surface RT tablet, according to a recent zdnet.com report.

In the declaration, Microsoft revealed that it will support its tablet offering for four years. The declaration came after questions were raised on the support policy of the company for the device. It was also noted that the four-year support that Microsoft has committed for the device is around the same period an undergraduate will be able to get a standard university degree.

The mainstream support phase of Microsoft for the consumer and the business versions of the Windows OS is typically around five years. Although another five-year extended support is given to the business versions.

The report also indicated that the Mainstream Support Date for the Windows RT will end on April 11, 2017 or over four years after the product became available in the market. This is due to the fact that the tablet is a combination of hardware and software. In addition, it will not have any extensions to the end date for its support since it is also a consumer device.

Consumers who purchase the device with the Windows RT will be able to get updates and security fixes to its software along with the MS Office Home and the Student edition until April 2017, although Microsoft may also opt to extend the date.

Although the support schedule is may be short when based on the standards of Microsoft, it is rather long when measured up against its competitors. The original iPad of Apple will not be receiving iOS updates anymore although it was released less than three years ago. On the other hand, it remains uncertain when the Google Nexus 10 will stop receiving updates. The other Android devices are also in the same situation. With the reputation of Google when it comes to Android devices, it is not likely for support to continue for a long time.

The Barnes & Noble Nook and Amazon Kindle are also in the same situation.

The Microsoft Surface tablet will soon have company as Acer, Dell, and Samsung are expected to release their own devices that will use the Windows RT OS. For the moment no statements were issued by Microsoft in connection to the support lifecycle for the devices manufactured by the OEM partners of the software giant.

At present the company has only declared support for the Windows RT of the Surface RT tablet along with the MS Office Home and the Student 2013 edition.
