Microsoft announced today that its Xbox team has compiled 40 Windows tablet games that will be available to purchasers of a Surface Tablet beginning October 26. Some of the games will be for the Windows RT and the others will only be available on the Surface Pro Microsoft. According to a Windows Experience blog, (posted August 31) popular games such as Wordament, Fruit Ninja, Minesweeper, and Angry Birds will be available on the system. Microsoft Studios is the developer of 29 of the titles assembled for the initial release.

The post went on to state, “Xbox is also announcing support from Rovio, Miniclip, Gameloft, ZeptoLab, Glu Mobile, Halfbrick Studios who are also bringing Xbox games to Windows 8 in this first wave. Ongoing new releases will of course be available through the holiday and beyond.” The games will be discoverable through the Windows 8 Games application and available at the Windows Store. The blog also mentioned the tablet PC games would offer Xbox Achievements, “as the ability to take advantage of certain Xbox features such as leaderboards, multiplayer modes, and connecting with friends.”

Windows 8 testers have been working on a number of these games for months now, in an effort to make them compatible with Windows RT and have succeeded in bringing quite a few into format for the October release. The reaction to the news from gamers conversing on Twitter and other social networks has been wide ranging – from excellent to less than impressive. The Windows 8 Xbox Games app will come preinstalled on all Surface Tablets.
