ThinkPad Tablet 2

Did the release of Windows RT and Windows 8 loaded tablets make any difference in presence of iOS and Android based gadgets? We can’t say much about this but the war of Windows 8 tablets is beefing up since many manufacturers have either floated their flagship devices or are in the process of doing so. Lenovo has finally announced its Lenovo ThinkPad 2 Windows 8 tablet and along with this, they have also shattered all expectations of a “low-priced, well-placed and premium” entity all together. Earlier this year, when Windows 8 loaded Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 concept landed in the industry, everyone was cheering an emergence of a low priced and well equipped gadget that was bound to blow you off your feet. We also covered it and with great enthusiasm, some of our respected readers showed interest in going for this tab; if ever it turned into a reality. Sorry folks, this isn’t the case anymore and there is no further speculation or dreams of getting this at $ 300 or even anywhere around it!

So what now? Well, Lenovo’s announcement for the ThinkPad 2 Windows 8 tablet came with a shock of $ 649 (starting price). Some of the lucky folks, who managed to get their hand on this tablet during some tech conference, the tablet is OK with an IPS display but the finishing and non-dock integration left them fairly perplexed and disappointed.

Windows 8 Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2

The Lenovo ThinkPad 2 is officially the first Windows 8 flagship tablet from Lenovo. A complete specification sheet for this device has yet to emerge, but we do know the following:

  • The Windows 8 Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 will be loaded with the latest dual core Intel Atom processor with speed ranging up to 1.8 Ghz.
  • 2 GB Ram to support a flawless user experience and to cater to growing needs to multitasking.
  • Pre-loaded with several Windows 8 apps and will have complete access to the Window 8 app store. (Since we have used some of the notebooks released by Lenovo, so you can’t really rule out loads of crapware and branded apps on board).
  • The overall size of the tablet is 11.6 inches where the screen size is believed to be 10.1 inches. The display is multi touch and supports high definition.
  • 10 hours of battery life (That’s one huge claim and we pray that Lenovo lives up to it)
  • USB Port
  • Optional NFC
  • An 8 MP primary (rear) camera and 2 MP front cam for video conferencing
  • Optional Windows 8 Stylus or a digitizer pens; as they call it today.
  • Up to 64 GB eMMC support

While these are some of the specs of Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2, the weight of this tablet is set at 600 grams or 1.3 Lbs. For me, the turn-off point is that it will be powered by an Intel Atom processor. The experience that I have with these kind of processors, biases me towards them running a full-fledge Windows 8 machine.

Surface RT Vs Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2

So how would one compare this to the Microsoft Surface Windows RT tablet? In my humble opinion, since the ThinkPad 2 runs on an Intel Atom processor while Surface RT boasts Nvidia Tegra 3; there is no comparison on usability at all. And also, the dock doesn’t integrate in this Lenovo ThinkPad 2 and only “rests” on the top. This means that you’ll have to carry the dock and the tablet in two separate cases in cases of mobility. I am not sure how you are going to react, but the Windows 8 ThinkPad Tablet 2 with an Intel Atom processor and a price tag of $ 649, is a bit too expensive and overrated.
